As part of her Learning Log work on Tudors, Erin wrote a script for King Henry VIII and then we brought hime to life!

In honour of the beautiful snowy day we have had in Otley, our day has had a snow theme today.  We created snow and sun diamond poems and then this afternoon we created some snowflakes of our own using this website.

Here is Scarlet’s poem:

And here is our snow shower:

We hope you like them!

Today in Year 4, children have been learning how to cut themselves out of a digital image. Once they mastered this skill, they had a go at arranging themselves into a repeating pattern. There are some examples below. Beautiful aren’t they?! (If a little scary too!)

We are going to be doing a lot more with this technique over the coming weeks, so keep tuning in!

Hokusai

We are learning about mountains in geography, so in art we have decided to investigate an artist who was inspired by Japan’s mightiest and most sacred mountain – Fuji. We have really enjoyed finding out a little about Hokusai. We found some of his pictures and learned how to set these to music using Photostory:

Today we have enjoyed reading the brilliant book Hokusai: The man who painted a mountain by Deborah Kogan Ray.

The children (and I!) were fascinated to look at the Japanese Kanji inside the book and we were all keen to have a go at learning some and trying to write (draw?!) some.

Here are two of our attempts:

Good aren’t they?!

On Friday we are going to have a go at sketching some of our favourite pictures and some scenes inspired by Hokusai. Make sure you check back to see how we get on!

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, Years 4 and 5 have been finding out a little about his life and discoveries.

Year 5 have been looking at Darwin’s voyage in the HMS Beagle from the point of view of a cabin boy.  Here is their fantastic collage of the ship:

HMS Beagle

Year 4 began the day by retracing the route of the HMS Beagle and plotting it on a giant world map:

The Voyage

Year 4 then looked at how animals have adapted to their surroundings over time. We thought that camouflage was a good way to avoid being eaten by predators.  We tested how good camouflage was by colouring 12 eggs in greens, yellows and browns and leaving 12 eggs their natural colour:

The we let the hungry predators go and search for their prey!

Let the hunt begin!

It was very easy to find the non-camouflaged eggs, but very difficult to find the camouflaged ones.

Finally both classes were ‘treated’ to glimpses of what their teachers may have looked like 3.7 million years ago using the DEVOLVE ME application on the Open university website.

Not too much difference you might think! Have a go – it’s just a bit of fun!

We have all really enjoyed finding out a little about Charles Darwin!

Year 5 have been finding out about control technology and its different uses in everyday life.

In class, we have been using ‘Coco’ to create a procedure – which is a sequence of instructions.

Here, we are learning how to create a procedure to make lights switch on and off in a model of a house. The house is attached to the computer via a USB.

Great! Our procedure works! Can you see the light in the bedroom?

Later, everyone created their own procedures for Coco’s ‘clown’ simulation.

We even made the clown ’speak’!

Today Year 4 spent the whole day immersed in Science (and other subjects too!) making interactive quiz boards.

We resrearched our topics using the internet and found some pictures to print out.

We used our knowledge of simple circuits to create question and answer boards that would light up a bulb when the correct answer was chosen.  Here are some photos:

This it what the back of our boards looked like:

Year 4 have been having fun today learning how to manipulate images and then creating a tiled, wallpaper effect. We used Textease Studio CT to do this. If you want to know how we did it, send us a comment or if you’re in school just ask one of us and we’ll be happy to show you!

Beebots

We stayed outside this afternoon to learn about controlling beebots – small robots which store a set of simple commands.  We found it difficult at first to ’see through the beebots’ eyes’ and make it turn in the right direction.  We soon got the hang of it though.  A few of us thought what a good idea it would be to have a crayon or pen attached to the underside of the belly so we could see where it had been.  This is what we will be moving onto soon when we start using the computer program ‘logo’.

Year 4 have been learning about giving instructions today.  We tried to give instructions to a class member who had been blind-folded.  We came across a few difficulties, such as angles of turn and distances of steps etc.

We then tried to set out a course in the playground for a ‘robot’ to follow.  We all then tried each other’s courses:
