Reception,Years 1 and 2 recently enjoyed a visit to Otley Courthouse to watch a performance of ‘Who’s Been Sitting In My Chair?’ It was a fabulous morning presented to us by Simon Hatfield who brought all the characters to life with lights, music and numerous props!

Today was the day for making the pizzas we had so carefully designed. Were they going to be as delicious as the children hoped?
The morning began by groups of children preparing their pizzas.
First we must wash our hands, put our aprons on and then look at our recipes to see what we needed.
Everything was ready.

1. Spread the tomato paste on the pizza base.

2. Chop up the toppings. Very carefully so as not to cut fingers!

3. Put the toppings on the pizza.

4. Sprinkle the cheese on the top.

5. Put the pizza in the oven and cook until it is golden and brown.
6. Finally eat the pizza!

The children thought of lots of words to describe their pizzas.
Yummy, delicious, srumptious, yummy scrummy, tasty, tomatoey.

The Pizza Cafe was also open to the staff. Here are the children waiting on the Lunch Time staff. We hope they all enjoyed their Pizzas?

Last Friday the Reception children tasted the different toppings they had bought at the supermarket. They tasted ham, pepperoni, salami, chicken, olives, cheese, apple, pineapple, potato, onions, pepper, mushroom and tomato. having decided which toppings they liked they designed their own pizza. Apple was a firm favourite which took me by surprise, maybe we are going to start a new trend in sweet pizzas!

Tasting them!

The Recipes

Today the Reception class set out of school to do some shopping. The children are going to be making pizzas next week as part of our work about food. They will designing their own pizzas but before they do that they need to taste some different toppings. With our shopping lists in hand we set out on a cold and foggy day to Sainsburys.

We were greeted by Linda Guy. We split into two groups, some went round with Linda and the rest went off with their baskets and shopping lists to do our shopping.

Linda showed us around and told us a little bit about the fruit and vegetables (the produce section of the super market)

We then had a look at the cheese and cooked meats counter. We even got to taste some cheese and chorizo sausage. Yum, delicious! We swopped over so that everybody got a chance to shop and look around the supermarket.

When we had finished our shopping we went to the self check out.

We had to look for the bar code on the packets and swipe them so the computer knew what we had bought.

We paid for our shopping.

We are looking forward to tasting all the differnet toppings tomorrow.

As part of our learning about healthy food the Reception class have been tasting some different fruits.
Pomegranates, Pineapple, Rhubarb, Mango and Blueberries.

They used lots of lovely vocabulary to describe the fruit.
Scrummy, delicious, awesome, juicy, tasty, yummy. A few of them were not so keen on the pomegranate.

After tasting the fruit they thought about how to record which fruits they had enjoyed tasting and which they hadn’t. Here are some of their ideas.

They also did some fantastic observational drawings of the pineapple and the pomegranate.

At the end of last week the Reception children were delighted by two stories the children in year 4 had written. The Reception Class listened carefully as the Year 4 children read their stories about Penguins. Well done Year 4, beautifully written and illustrated stories. The Reception Class loved them.

The children in the Reception class have been setting up a Cafe in their role play area. To help them to do this Miss Wilson took the children out to a “Real Life ” Cafe in Otley. It was a chilly walk there but what a welcome we got from the ladies in the Cafe.
The children had one pound to spend. They chose a drink and a biscuit, “that will be 95p please” said the ladies they handed over thier pound coin and waited for their change. The children looked around the cafe for any signs and writing and thought about what they would need in their cafe at school. It was lots of fun for the children and the cappacino was very much appreciated by the staff and parents!!

The Reception Class are learning about different celebrations this half term. We started our topic with Bonfire Night. We talked about the fireworks some of the children had seen last night and then thought of lots of words to describe what they had seen and heard.
Together as a whole class we wrote a poem.

Fire works by the Reception Class.

I love watching fireworks!
Fireworks bang.
Fireworks sparkle.
Fireworks crash.
Fire works explode.
Fireworks whiz.
Fireworks zoom.
Fireworks crackle.
Fireworks make stars.
I love watching fireworks!

We then said our poem togehter adding some actions. We were then very excited to try out the new video recorder and capture our poem on the film. Enjoy the performance

On Wednesday Rob Senior form Bradford College came into school. Around the edge of the carpet were tanks with something in them but we didn’t know what.

It was very exciting as we pulled off the cloths from over the tanks. What was going to be inside?
In the first one there was a rat. I was amazed how many of the children were happy to hold ratty.

Even Mr Robertson was brave enough to have a cuddle with Ratty!

We then looked at.........
A giant snail

A tarantula. We weren't aloud to hold that one!

Some Stick Insects

Christopher was very interested in these and had a careful look at one of them as it sat on his hand.

The Reception children were very excited when they went into the hall to get out the large apparatus for the first time. here are some of the photographs of the children using the apparatus very carefully.
