Last week, six children from Year 5 visited Scargill House near Kettlewell and enjoyed a few days of fun packed activities with children from three other schools.

On the first day they made some wonderful dreamcatchers!

On the second day they enjoyed drama and circus skills.

All the activities were punctuated with food!

As you will know, our Carnival had to be cancelled this year due to the extreme weather we have been having.  Here is a glimpse of what some of the Carnival-goers would have looked like:  Ahoy!

We were all lying in the bed when the bombing began and the sirens started.  We were so scared.  We got out of bed.  My mum grabbed some food.  I grabbed a teddy. My dad grabbed a book.  We ran so fast into the garden and into the air raid shelter.  We sat on some old wooden chairs, hoping that our house wouldn’t get bombed.

We put our gas masks on.  It smelled like rubber. I knew we were at war.  My mum wrapped me up in her arms.  It felt like the darkness never ended.  We waited for the bombs to stop.  We all sang happy songs. Some of the children went to sleep.  My dad read his book.  My mum slept all the way through.  Suddenly it got louder and more planes came in.  Then it stopped and it all went quiet.  The bombs had stopped.  Hopefully for the last time.

In Literacy, Year 4 are writing narratives about a first night in an air raid shelter.  To help with the imagination, we had a surprise mock air-raid in class today with a siren and some battle sounds.  Children were quick to respond and disappear under their Morrison Shelters (tables!).  Here are some photos:

Year 4 have been working on a program called logo recently.  It is an educational programming langauge used to move an on-screen ‘turtle’.  They have become very talented at using this piece of software and many of the children have asked where they can get it from.

The software can be freely downloaded from http://www.softronix.com/logo.html along with various tutorials on how to get more from the program.

Let me know if you have any problemds downloading this.

The play was about a little girl named Sara who lived in India. Sara was going to London to a big school called Miss Minchin’s. Sara was new at the beginning of the show. Miss Minchin was a bad lady, so bad she sent children to the attic. The part that was good was the monkey because he thought Miss Minchin was like Shrek’s bottom. The thing that could be better is to see the war. The monkey could have gone round the audience. I think the whole world should see it.

The play was about a girl who lived in India and went to another school called Miss Minchin’s School for Girls. Miss Minchin was a very nasty lady who was Sara’s teacher. Miss Minchin’s favourite girl was Lavinia. I liked the bit when the monkey said that Miss Minchin looked like Shrek’s bottom. I liked the bit when I was chosen to be a little genie. I like the bit when Mr Ramdaz burnt his bottom. I think they could make it better by having more room. The play was great. Book it now!

Sara lived in a school for girls. Sara lived in India. The best part was when the monkey said to Miss Minchin “You look like Shrek’s bottom”. It could be better if the monkey went crazy running round the audience. My family could watch it. It is a good play.

This story is about a little girl that went to a bad school. The little girl is called Sara and her dad nearly died so he had to have a sling. I think the funny part was when Mr Ramdaz ran out shouting “Cake”. Then we laughed so he turned round and jumped back home. Every school in England should book it.
