Year 3 have been thinking about the problems of plastic bags this year.  They have made some fantastic recycled calendars and packaging and it made me think about how many plastic bags we must use in Otley.  Did you know it can take 400 years for a plastic bag to rot away and many bags can end up in our rivers, lakes and oceans casuing pollution and dangers to marine life.  On the other hand, plastic bags are very handy and inexpensive….  What do you think?

In Year 3 we have been learning about some of the damage that plastic bags can do to the environment. Our calendar design was made from recycled and reused materials and we packaged them in bags that ‘didn’t cost the earth!’ All of the children worked really hard and made them with care and attention. Here are a few of our finished products.

If you need some ideas for a good book to read, then check out this link.

Author Michael Morpurgo lists 100 great books for younger and older readers. Have a look and let us know in the comments section if you have read any of them. Maybe you disagree?

Year 2 have been working on traditional tales and changed the characters of the goats and the troll to write their own alternative stories. James has used some excellent story-telling words in his version.

Once upon a time there lived three bad billy goats gruff that (sic) were always mean. On their side of the bridge there was no food so they decided they should eat the troll’s food. One summer morning they sneaked into the troll’s home. They broke lots of things and ate all the food. When the troll turned up the goats butted him in the river. Splash! Eventually the troll got out and he sat crying. The goats started to feel guilty so they said “sorry”. The goats built all the things they broke and they lived happily ever after.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hope everyone had a good rest and a festive time!

I think we are all back into the routine of school life and work again, so hopefully what we have in store for everyone this term and just after the Easter break, will be fun and enjoyable.

FILM NIGHT – A return of this popular event on Tuesday 22nd January 5.30 – 7pm.

Two short films, to cater for all age groups.

£1 per child to cover refreshments costs.

Children must be collected from the school by an adult after the event.

BAGS 2 SCHOOL – As this has proved to be a successful fundraiser last time we have decided to repeat it. If you would like to clean out those unwanted clothes, towels, curtains, soft toys etc, then we would welcome them.

We will be distributing bags to you and around the local area from Tuesday 5th February.

We are asking everyone to start bringing your full bags (black bin bags are fine) as soon as you can to school and leave them outside the school garages, which are located in the school staff car park.

For those who are unable to bring the bags to school a collection will take place on Thursday the 28th February from 9.30 am – 10.30 am. If anyone could help with this collection please let Karen McHale know via school.

The more bags we fill the more £££’s we make!!!!!

LEAP DAY DISCO – 29th February only happens once every four years, and we thought we’d mark the occasion with a disco!

            KS1 – Disco will start at 5.30 pm – 6.30 pm

            KS2 – Disco will start at 6.45 pm – 7.45 pm

A tuck shop will be available selling sweets, crisps, soft drinks etc.

Entry Fee – £1.50 per child.

(All children are welcome and must be collected by an adult after the event)

SPONSORED EVENT – In past years this term has seen the famous Sponsored Bounce on a hired bouncy castle. This year it has been decided that, once the weather improves and we get a drier spell of weather, the children will take part in a sponsored walk/run around the playing fields. The sponsored bounce has been a great success but like anything we thought we would try something different for a change. Details will follow at a later date.

ADULT QUIZ NIGHT – Our Family Quiz Night that took place in November was such a success, and we thought we would try a repeat for adults only. This will be held on Friday 14th March at 7.30 pm (until it finishes!!!!!).  There will be a bar, nibbles and a disco, so if you fancy a drink and a dance, come and join us for a fun night out!

Tickets will be on sale at £2.50 from 18th February, and can be purchased via Andrea Sowden in school or via class reps.  Once again we have a limited amount of spaces (90 max.), so please don’t hesitate to buy your tickets.

Hope to see you there.

THE CIRCUS – Arriving at Otley All Saints on Saturday 12th April.

A full circus marquee will be erected on the playing fields. There will be clowns, jugglers, acrobats and plenty more surprises in store. (No animals will be performing at the circus).

There will be 3 performances throughout the day starting at 1.00pm.

1st performance (pink tickets) 1.00 pm

2nd performance (blue tickets) 2.30 pm

3rd performance (green tickets) 4.00 pm

All tickets are £5.00 each.

There are a total of 450 tickets to sell, so much publicity is needed. If you know anyone who would be interested in the circus please let your class reps know.

Please don’t hesitate to purchase tickets as we will be shortly offering them to other schools, clubs etc.

We will be sending out pre-order forms for your tickets, stating specified time and amount of tickets required. We will also be selling tickets in the playground. (Date to follow)

A café will be held in the school hall on the day of the circus for refreshments (soft drinks, crisps, cakes etc.)

We will also have a stall selling flashing wands, lights etc.

The circus will be selling candyfloss and popcorn!

We are sure you will find this a very enjoyable and fun day for your family!

ACTIVITY TRAIL – Thanks to a year of dedicated fund raising we are now in a position to place an order for the activity trail, to be built alongside our playground.  This will give the children more space and opportunities for play and will be much enjoyed.  We will keep you updated as to progress.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who takes part in fundraising, sponsoring and volunteering. Without the help of many fundraising would not be possible or enjoyable.

We hope that you will all enjoy what we have in store for you. A PTA booklet is, as we speak, being put together, just to give you an idea of what other forthcoming events we have in store!

MANY THANKS

Karen McHale (Chairperson) and the PTA Committee

NEXT MEETING 20th February 6.30 pm at the school

The smell of cooking onions was soon spreading through the school this morning as the children began making Pizzas.
All the reception children had designed their very own pizzas having tasted a variety of different toppings.

The choices were: olives, ham, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red pepper, chicken, sweetcorn, onions, pineapple and tomato. Everybody was allowed to choose three toppings to add to their pizza. What would you have on your pizza?

Mmmmmm which three shall I choose?
On Friday the children took orders from the staff, this was very popular and twenty pizza were ordered for lunch time!
The Chefs worked hard all morning to make their Pizzas and to help make Pizzas for all the staff.
The cafe was declared open when our first customers arrived for their dinner.

The news soon spread and our next customers came hot foot down form their classrooms.

The children had to wait a little longer to taste their Pizzas. They were cooked in the big school ovens. Eventually at about 2.30pm the children were sitting waiting to be served with a delicious, hot, homemade Pizza.

What an exciting and busy day was had by all!

Last Thursday saw chess fever grip theYear 4 classroom at lunchtime as we began the 2008 British Land Chess Tournament in school.

Even the two B.Ed students got involved – Miss Bramley teaching Mr Taylor a valuable lesson in chess!

Year 4 have been investigating the properties of various objects and deciding whether they are solid or liquid.  It caused quite a debate!

This term the children in the Reception Class have a focus on “Food”. For the last few days the children have been busy designing an Italian Cafe in their role play area. The Grand Opening is on Wednesday 16th January. They are all very excited. Today some of the children have been filling in application forms for a job either as a chef or a waiter in the Cafe. Tomorrow interviews will be held to name our first employees!
I am sure there will be a large queue to be the first customer in our cafe!
Next Monday all the children will become Chefs for the day as they prepare and cook thier own Pizzas. The Cafe will be open to staff on Monday 21st January at Lunch time. The Pizzas will be very reasonably priced. Get your orders in early! “CIAO”
