Back in January, some Year 5 children carried out a watch on Nature Club’s bird feeders to find out which bird species were visiting us. We then submitted the results to the RSPB as part of their ‘Big Schools’ Bird Watch’ survey.

The RSPB have now analysed the results, which have been sent in from schools across the UK, and published their findings. If you are interested in seeing the bigger picture, follow the link below:

At the same time, the RSPB encouraged people across the country to survey the birds visiting their gardens and these results may be found at:

Even though it’s Spring, remember to keep feeding your garden birds during the nesting season.

The Reception class loved the mile run for sports relief so much that in the afternoon some of the children decided to run the mile again. All was going well, we were on lap seven out of ten when Miss Wilson did a spectacular fall down a hole and ended up with an ice pack taped to her ankle with masking tape. However we continued round the course and finished the second mile of the day. Well done to all the Reception Class and particularly to those who ran the two miles.

The reception children have been enjoying the Activity trail this week. Thank you PTA “we think it is great!”
Here are a few photos of us enjoying our first visit.

On Saturday 8th of march 60 children and Parents from drama club went to a performance of The King and I performed by Ilkley Operatic Society.
It was a brillaint production and I hope the children gained some understanding of how a production runs.
Drama club are already busy learning songs and this week selecting audition pieces for our summer production. I am sure it will be another fantastic success but there is lots of hard work and commitment to put in before the show goes ahead on Wednesday and Thursday 9th and 10th of July.

Look at our wonderful Waterfall Collages.
The reception children worked very hard, selecting the appropriate materials to make these amazing pictures. One member of staff said that if we were selling them could she be the first in the queue! I want to dive in and have a swim around in the beautiful water! what do you think?

The rest of the collages are displayed in our classroom. Come and have a look!

This half term the reception children have been learning more about water and its uses.
The children all knew that plants need water to grow. We wondered just waht happens to the water and where it goes in the plants.
We set up an investigation with some roses to find out a little bit more. We put some white roses in a jug of water.

Then we put an individual rose in some water and ink. Could we change the roses from white to blue? The children thought carefully about this. Some thought we might have to turn the roses upside down and dip them in the coloured water. others thought the coloured water would go up the stem and into the flowre thus changing the colour of the petals.
We left the flowers over night. It was an anxious time for us all. Would the flowers have changed colour when we got to school the next day? There was an air of great excitement running round the classroom the following morning. the reception class had performed some magic! Our once white roses now had a beautiful tinge of turquoise around the edge of the petals!

Our Next Investigation.
We poured some oil into a cylinder of water. What would happen? We then found out that the oil floats on top of the water.

We then dripped some food colouring on to the top of the oil. It stayed in droplets in the oil and then very slowly it began to seep through into the water and changed it green.

It was amazing to watch .

Year 2 have really enjoyed learning about The Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys this term. DT work was designing and making a model fire engine re-using a box for the chassis. Come and have a look in the classroom or library to see them in more detail.

Year 2 have been working on writing information, and produced these fact sheets with Mrs Bower and Mrs Raybould just before the new Activity Trail opened. They had a look at the plans and the work in progress.

The Activity Trail
How we got it!
School Council ordered an activity trail for school. We thought it would be fun!
This is what there is!
Rock and roll log
Cross tightrope walk
Stepping stones
Weaving wood
What happens with it
The rock and roll log has a rope at the top and at the bottom there is a log but it doesn’t just stay still. It rolls around and you have to get to the other end without falling off. The cross tightrope walk is a rope that goes straight across and two ropes that go diagonally. The stepping stones are bits of wood in a cylinder. You have to step on each one without falling off. The weaving wood is a stick going across and a bit that goes down. You have to go in and out of them.

Our Activity Trail
The activity trail is in the playground at school. Only one class at a time can go on it.
How we got it
We got the activity trail because we wanted to make our playground better. We got the activity trail by raising money. When we started to raise money it was only December!
How to keep safe on it
Soon there will be a safety surface on the activity trail.

The Activity Trail
How it was built
The activity trail was built by a group of very well-trained builders. The school council was very kind to order it for us because we don’t have a very exciting playground! The builders built it very quickly. It was done in no time.
What is in it!
Balance weaver
Crossed rope walk
Rubber step posts
Wobble walkway
Rock and roll log.

Thomas G did these excellent diagrams with labels.

Olivia added diagrams and labels to her information to help explain it.

Well we have finally finished the Tudor Houses today – apologies if children have been coming home covered in paint.  I have tried to keep it to a minimum, but we all got very into this project!

The children have worked SO hard on the houses, thinking carefully about the overall look and the finer details of their designs.  We have begun to think about the types of families who might inhabit our houses and what their stories might be…

Our houses will also be leant out to Year 2, who are going to try and recreate a Pudding Lane scene – but without the fire!

Anyway, have a look and if you like them, leave us a comment!

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed trying out the new Activity Trail today. Thank you to everyone who helped raise money to buy it.
