To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, Years 4 and 5 have been finding out a little about his life and discoveries.

Year 5 have been looking at Darwin’s voyage in the HMS Beagle from the point of view of a cabin boy.  Here is their fantastic collage of the ship:

HMS Beagle

Year 4 began the day by retracing the route of the HMS Beagle and plotting it on a giant world map:

The Voyage

Year 4 then looked at how animals have adapted to their surroundings over time. We thought that camouflage was a good way to avoid being eaten by predators.  We tested how good camouflage was by colouring 12 eggs in greens, yellows and browns and leaving 12 eggs their natural colour:

Eggs

The we let the hungry predators go and search for their prey!

Let the hunt begin!

It was very easy to find the non-camouflaged eggs, but very difficult to find the camouflaged ones.

Finally both classes were ‘treated’ to glimpses of what their teachers may have looked like 3.7 million years ago using the DEVOLVE ME application on the Open university website.

Not too much difference you might think! Have a go – it’s just a bit of fun!

We have all really enjoyed finding out a little about Charles Darwin!

Year 4 have been writing a story with our French friends in Finland (no that’s not a mistake!)

We wrote a setting for the story and Madame Lunetta’s class wrote a character profile. This is the first part of the story about Maxime. We look forward to hearing what happens about him next!

Maxime’s first adventure.  Max was bored. He was just standing there kicking his ball against the wall. It was the summer holidays and he was being forced to stay at his rich Aunt Gretta’s house, where he didn’t know anyone. “This is so boring,” groaned Max. “I wish there was something exciting to do.” Feeling angry and fed up, Max gave the ball a tremendous whack. He watched as the ball flew over a high brick wall. “Great,” muttered Max, “well done me!” Max knew he wasn’t allowed in the old garden, but he’d have to take a risk to get his ball back. Quick as lightning he was over the wall and into the garden.                There were tall trees like a forest which was like a foreign land. He heard the leaves crackling beneath his feet. There were rabbits scuttling around in a frenzy. Maxime saw a frog leap out of a bog. He could hear an eagle circling around him like a high speed car. Maxime heard somebody whisper, “Your ball is in the bog.” Maxime saw a gate strangled by ivy. As he got closer, it got spookier and darker.                Max saw a black marble gate. It had ancient runes on it in a pattern. Beside the gate two willow trees hung like menacing dead snakes. As he approached the gate he saw something twitch! As fast as light the dead trees flung him to the bumpy, hard ground.                Max wiped his face swiftly, however his face was still sore. Immediately he sprinted through the tree guardians’ legs and into the fresh open air.                Max was through the gate and tumbled to the ground. Freezing cold air rushed around him like an ice cold blanket. Max slowly stumbled to his feet, wiping the icy droplets from his yellow jumper. “Where am I ?” whispered Max to himself. Suddenly he heard footsteps coming towards him. Loud footsteps. Max spun round to go back through the gate. But the gate had gone…… Â
