Haiku Montage

Year 4 have spent a lot of their time in Literacy this week using their Spring Haiku and the photos from our ginko to produce some video presentations.Â Some of these have been put together to create a haiku montage.

Well done to all of Year 4 who quickly learned how to use the software and produced some excellent videos.

Dear Mr Robertson’s Class

I think you have made an excellent start to composing haiku and your IT skills must be of a high standard to make this montage.

To continue to develop your haiku-writing skills, you could think about how you could describe haiku moments without using the word “like” to compare things. For example, describing a pile of blossom blown up by the wind as “a drift of blossom” will make people think of snow without you needing to say that the blossom is “like snow”.

In haiku (and other types of writing) this is known as “show, don’t tell” and it enables the person reading the poem to make a connection when reading , which gives them a more rewarding experience and means people will remember your haiku for longer.

These are all graduates from Bath Spa University, with whom I worked with on several haiku projects, including haiku & renga workshops to the 24 Hour Haiku Answerphone, which is still going strong!

As Matt has suggested with his comments, there are more stages to learn with haiku, which is why so many people stay writing these poems through their lifetime.

PS – Mr Robertson – there’s an error on my earlier post, Polona is Slovenian, not Slovakian – there’s probably a geography lesson for the pupils (and me…) in there!
