Positive reading experiences are central to the whole curriculum at Otley All Saints C.E. Primary School. From the moment children enter our school, they are exposed to a wealth of high-quality texts and engaging reading experiences, feeding their imagination and instilling a lifelong love of reading. This will not only support their learning across the curriculum, but also enrich their lives and provide them with the opportunity to forge their own aspirations for the future. Using books as a basis for learning, pleasure, talk and play, we aim to develop fluent, inquisitive readers, ensuring that every child can reach their full potential whilst also providing them with a valuable tool for their mental health: a way of becoming immersed in other worlds, both real and imagined.

Throughout our teaching of reading, we strive to value and celebrate diversity and promote children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We aim to introduce our children to a range of authors and text types that they may not choose themselves and develop this further by inviting new authors into school. We place a high value on reading for pleasure, and encourage our children to spend some time each day reading to themselves, ensuring the range of books in our classroom libraries and school libraries is inviting and diverse. We also place great value on the importance of children being read to daily, regardless of age, and encourage teachers to build time into their day for this as a priority. Our aim is that every child will choose to read for pleasure and find real enjoyment in reading.

At Otley All Saints CE Primary School, we use the Literacy Shed ‘VIPERS’ reading skills (vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summary/sequencing skills) to support reading comprehension and ensure our children are confident answering questions across all strands of reading. If you would like to use the VIPERS question stems with your child when you read together at home, they are available here:
